The Knights Templar in Berkshire: Guardians of Faith and Land
Where the River Thames marks the historic boundary between Buckinghamshire and Berkshire, the Knights Templar established one of their key strongholds — the Preceptory of Bisham. Situated on the Buckinghamshire side, Bisham’s fertile land and proximity to London made it an ideal base for the Templars’ operations in southern England.
From Bisham, the Order managed an extensive network of properties across the region, including sites in Inkpen, Kintbury, and Sparsholt. These holdings not only supported the Templars’ military efforts in the Holy Land but also left a lasting spiritual and architectural legacy in the Berkshire countryside.
This site explores the Templars’ enduring presence in Berkshire — the lands they farmed, the churches they influenced, and the stories still etched into stone centuries later.
