In June 1381, rebellion swept into London. Among the rebels’ most deliberate targets was the great Priory of St John at Clerkenwell, headquarters of the Knights Hospitaller in England. Its destruction was no random act of violence. At the centre of the story stood one man: Sir Robert Hales, Prior of the Hospitallers and Treasurer of England. To the rebels he had come to represent oppressive lordship, taxation and a government they believed had betrayed the young King Richard II.

THE KNIGHTS TEMPLAR IN LONDON: ENGLAND’S TEMPLAR HEARTLAND

London was the principal centre of the Knights Templar in England, serving as the administrative and strategic heart of the Order’s nationwide network. The London preceptory stood above all others in the country, governing 28 subordinate preceptories and acting as the seat of the Master Templar in England, who exercised authority over the entire Order across the realm.

In the Middle Ages, long before Clerkenwell became part of the dense urban fabric of London, it was the headquarters of one of the most powerful religious and military orders in Europe: the Knights Hospitallers of St John of Jerusalem.
Founded during the Crusades, the Hospitallers began as a charitable brotherhood dedicated to caring for sick and injured pilgrims travelling to the Holy Land. As conditions grew more dangerous, the Order gradually took on a military role, defending Christian territories while never abandoning its core mission of hospitality and medical care.
